What GPUs will work well with a 320w PSU? GTX 650-e?

Hey guys,

I recently bought a HP Z200 workstation. It currently has a XFX Radeon HD 6850 which is demanding a large amount of power when it's under load. The games I play include titles like Age of Empires III, I mostly play war strategy games. I believe that this is causing the PC to crash because it's drawing from a 320w PSU which is probably getting overloaded and causing the game to freeze.

I've done quite a bit of reading around the Z200 and it seems that you can't upgrade the PSU as HP have made it as difficult as possible to do so with custom fixings / sizes etc. It would seem then, that my only option is to upgrade the card to a lower wattage model. I'm looking at the GTX 650-E which apparently draws a maximum of 64w when under load. Therefore, on the basis of my PC's spec below should a 320w PSU be able to handle this card?

HP Z200 Workstation
Intel i3 540 Dual Core - 115w under load
HDDs, RAM, Motherboard,
DVD - RW, fans etc - 110w?
GTX 650 - 64w under load?

Total : 289w

Is that a reasonable analysis / assumption to buy a GTX 650 on? If not, can you recommend any other cards that require less power?

Thanks for everyones help in advance.

A 650 or a 750 ti should work with that setup. You're overestimating the power usage of some of the components, so either card should comfortably work with that PSU in that system (I wouldn't go for any higher consumption card though).

If you really are completely stuck with that power supply, I'd recommend a 750 or 750 ti (only a version that doesn't need a 6-pin power connector). A plain 650 will sadly perform slightly worse than your current 6850, while a 750 or 750 ti would be a decent step up.

EDIT: Ninja'd ;)

The 750TI looks great but all the reviews show much smaller looking GPUs than the picture on amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/GeForce-Graphics-Express-128-bit-Dust-Proof/dp/B00IITDIHM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1401992327&sr=8-2&keywords=Asus+Nvidia+GeForce+750Ti) can I be sure it's the same card and will deliver the same efficiency?

There are a number of different card designs for the 750 ti, some bigger, some smaller. If the reviews you've been reading are based on the reference specification 750 ti, then regardless of which 750 ti you buy, you'll be getting at least that much performance (some models will perform even better, as they'll have been overclocked by the manufacturer).

The model you linked to seems to be a reference spec card, so will certainly deliver the efficiency you desire (60W card).
