Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Motherboard

Yeah that's a great motherboard! Gigabyte is a good name too.

It should be a great purchase.

Hi,
I wouldn't say that I know nothing about PCs. Generally with most hardware I know what I'm talking about. But motherboards are a bit out of my depth.

A friend is asking if the Gigabyte Z87-HD3 Motherboard is suitable for an i5 4670k (he wants to overclock it) and the nVidia GTX 660.

I've left a link to the same Amazon page that he linked me to. Generally speaking Tom's Hardware is quite good at this sort of thing and I hope that you won't disappoint!

Thanks

And it will be compatible with the i5 4670k and 660?
I'm sorry if I'm asking a really obvious question, but this is my weakest area when it comes to hardware.

Oh, also, is there any particular type of DDR 3 RAM?

Yeah, definitely. That will work with anything Intel Haswell. The GTX 660 will drop right in.

I'd actually recommend this instead: http://www.amazon.co.uk/GIGABYTE-Z97-HD3-LGA1150-Motherboard-USB3-0/dp/B00K9R1NMS/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1401995387&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=gigayte+z97-hd3

It is the newer version of the board that will work with intel's next generation CPUs, Broadwell.

I'd recommend 1600 mhz DDR3 RAM. Make sure the latencies are low, like 9-9-9-24 or something.

That's great! Thanks! I'll tell my friend now!

Wouldn't 1866MHz be better for the motherboard?

Generally, RAM speed doesn't matter one bit. 1600 mhz RAM is a better choice because it is cheaper, and it just isn't worth the premium for faster RAM.

The motherboard actually doesn't support 1866 ram, it will automatically run at 1600. You can overclock it 1866.

Unless the cost difference is minimal, just get the 1600 mHz RAM.
