I recently tried to help fix a friend's computer. He had just built it but it was never operational. With some troubleshooting, I managed to boot to the BIOS. At that point, I looked at SATA connections and it recognized the DVD drive but not the HDD. The DVD drive would light up but wouldn't attempt to open and wouldn't read discs when I put one in (using paperclip to open drive). I never did get it to recognized the HDD either...I tried using different SATA ports and a different cable. It could be that the motherboard was damaged when he tried to put it together himself. Any ideas?

Hmm, it could possibly be the motherboard. You could try using the SATA port and cable from the DVD drive and use it for the HDD and see if it will be recognized in the bios. If not, try getting a replacement.

well..i do not know which hardwares you got , even if its a old pc or new?
but it sound bad to me . it can be the mobo or psu or the hdd too
what kind or readings you have in the bios about the psu voltages and temps? if everythings good on thoses reading?
look like a dead mobo or hdd
