I am new to using windows 8 and can not figure out where to set the default power plan while on battery and plugged in. When i boot up my computer on battery it seems to select the high performance plan by default and I have to manually switch plans to balanced so I can save battery life.

Is there any way to change which plan windows selects by default depending on if I am on battery power or plugged in?

Thanks for the help in advance

Go to Power options in Control Panel (right click in the lower left corner and a menu of options should come up, click "Power Options"). Click the radio button on the plan you want to keep. You can also "change plan settings" to set more fine-tuned settings

Thanks for the quick reply.

If I followed your instructions properly this just brings me to the options where I can switch current plans. The problem is when I restart my computer on battery the plan goes back to High performance plan when I want it to be set to balanced my default without me having to go into the power options and select the plan every time.

Yes now that you mention it I did not think that it would interfere but you may be right. The laptop is an Asus k550L and it came preloaded with Asus' Power4gear. This program adds a couple new plans to my power options menu. I'm not sure how it is interfering but perhaps you right in saying this could be the reason.

Ok so I looked through the Asus Power4gear program and didn't see any options about default power plans. I just uninstalled the program and restarted my laptop on battery and it stayed on the selected power plan I picked. It would still be nice if there were easy options in Windows 8.1 to choose the default plans I want depending if I am on battery or plugged in. While plugged in I would like to have it go to high performance when I boot up without having to select the option each time manually.

If you choose "change plan settings" under the default plan you can set individual settings for both running on battery and on AC jack. You could take the default plan and change the settings for plugged in to match high performance settings. Or you could create a new custom power plan of your own and set that as default (on the left hand pane in power settings - "create power plan")

Thanks for the help this is for the most part exactly what I was looking for. I figured you should be able to either just pick a default plan for battery like (balanced) and another for when you are plugged in (High performance) but it looks like you have to just pick a single plan and go through all the advanced power settings to specify what you want for when you are either on battery or plugged in
