what is a I/0 error on start up

my computer is a emachine laptop (windows 7- 64 bit) I cannot boot it up' and do not have a recovery or start up disk for the windows 7, it offers me a recovery start but after running this it tells me , unable to repair. I have tried starting it in safe mode still no luck and now I get the error message of I/0 error. can you help thanks

I have no ran into that error before and it is probably generic for eMachine computers. I/O is normally related to the hard drive device.

Can you try connecting the hard drive to a different cable? Is it plugged in? Does it have power?

It could also be the USB/SERIAL/PS2 ports but I assume it is referring to the hard drive not being detected or has disk errors.
