So I recently built my own PC and made the mistake of connecting my monitor to my mobo right off the bat. I haven't realized this since now, when I realized I had been using the on board graphics card. So I immediately plugged my HDMI cable into my Asus R9 290 and got no signal. Any ideas?

It should automatically detect the gpu and set it to the primary display. However, if it doesn't, unplug the R9 290, and use the onboard graphics to access the BIOS, then change the display to Primary Display Adapter. Then shutdown and then install the R9 290 and test again.
If that doesn't work then try to clear CMOS.
