My wife has a Intel Core i7-720QM Processor powered Dell, bought in 2010. The past few days, it has been shutting down on its own, so I figured it was just dusty. Cleaned it out, and had the same results. I installed a temp monitor (forgot the exact one) and it was idling around 80c on all 4 cores not running any foreground apps.

Tore the laptop down to the motherboard, and cleaned and re-added Thermal Compound to the GPU and CPU, but has the same issues. I dropped the max cpu usage down to 65%, and have a box fan blowing on it, and idling around mid 70c.

Any suggestions? I am reading alot of overheating issues with this model laptop, but seems strange it would just crop up like this all of a sudden. It seems a replacement CPU would run $300+ so at this point I would rather put the funds toward a replacement, rather than tossing cash at what may, or may not be the issue.

I opened up the fan vent on the bottom of the laptop, as well as purchased a dual fan cooler stand, but it did not seem to help much at all. Streamed a video from netflix, and it jumped to 100c, and shut off.

I had a spare 12v computer fan (powered by a 12v wall adapter), so mounted it directly over the vent on the bottom of the laptop I opened up previously. now streaming the same video, it is hovering around 89-91c. It's an older fan so maybe I can find a higher output model.
