AMD vs Intel/AMD vs NVIDIA

From what I've heard Intel is better than AMD and NVIDIA is better than AMD. But what I'm wondering is the price worth it? For example, what would be the difference between a R9 280x and a GTX 770 or a R9 290x vs GTX 780? Also the difference between 8350 vs i5 4670k? I'm leaning towards AMD because it seems more 'bang for the buck'. But would it be worth it to just go with NVIDIA/Intel? Thanks for all responses.

Alright here is my opinion, and this thread is sure to turn into a war BTW....

In cpus, the Athlon x4 750k/760k for $80-85 are the ONLY TWO AMD cpus I can recommend. The AM3+ platform is old and the FXs do not compete as well as they did 2 years ago. I would get pretty much ANY 4th gen i5 over any 8 core FX and ANY 4th gen i3 over any 6 core FX. AMDs are not even "better for a budget" as so many people keep saying.

The video cards are a different story as the AMD video cards really do have a better price/performance factor.

It's a toss up for most of them and it really just depends on what is on sale at the time.
As far as typical price/performance goes- R7 260x < GTX750ti < R7 265 < R7 270 < R7 270x < GTX 760 < R9 280 < R9...

100% agree, which is why I'm going with Intel for cpu and Amd for video card

As far as the GPU's go they should be about the same speed and the differences will mainly depend on what you do with the card. What games you play etc. The same goes for the CPU's. If you tend to play games that are highly unoptimized (Skyrim for example) then the i5 4670K will show significant speed differences other times especially in newer games the speed difference will be negligible and you really won't notice it. (Skyrim and Starcraft II are the main games where Intel/AMD differences are large).

I should note given the parts you picked there are times where the 8350 is faster than the i5 4670K but not very many. On the other hand the GTX 770/780 vs the R280x/290x is a back and forth game depending on the games you pick. Your best bet is to look at the software/games you play/use and look for benchmarks on them and see where your money is best spent.

I'll explain myself a little further. I don't hate the FX cpus and they are not terrible. There WILL be times when they outperform the i5. There are a handful of games that prefer more than 4 cores. It's just that MOST of the time, like 90% of the time, even the "slowest" Haswell i5, the 4430, will outperform ANY FX cpu no matter how much it's overclocked. Since overclocking the FXs are basically a must, it takes away from their value when compared against a locked i5 because you have to pay extra for a better motherboard and you have to add in an aftermarket cooler.

The R7 265 is a litle better than the GTX750ti for about the same price but it uses a lot more power. They are a push.
The GTX760 is better than the R7 270x but it is also more expensive. I prefer the 760 here.
The R9 280x is a little better than the GTX760 but it is also more expensive. They are a push.
The GTX770 is a little better than the R9 280x but it is also more expensive. I prefer the 770 here.
The R9 290 is a good bit better than the GTX770 and it's only a little more. I prefer the 290 here.
The R9 290 is about as good overall as the GTX780 and it's cheaper. I prefer the 290 here too.
The R9 290x is almost as good as the GTX780ti but it's WAY cheaper. The 290x is an easy choice here.

I would also like to add t that the fx bulldozer architecture is now dead and is 2 years old as the i5 4th ten didn't come out too long ago. Also the fx don't have great single core performance which many games utilize rather than 8 cores.
