Hello everyone!

I need some help BIG TIME!!

I am doing some computer work for my boss. He purchased a new laptop, new router, and a new Western Digital Hard drive backup system called my cloud I believe.

I networked all his computers in his office and that was pretty easy as all those computers are on windows 8. His old laptop is on windows XP and when I tried to network that computer to the network it had to do a reboot for the settings to take effect. Once the old laptop restarted I could no longer log in with his username and password. I was able to use google and I was able to boot the old laptop up by logging in with username: administrator and password left blank.

I then went to control panel, then users, and his user profile was no longer showing there.

I was able to find the file tree for his user profile under the C:/ drive under documents and settings.

I copy and pasted that file tree to an external hard drive so I hope I have his windows XP user profile backed up.

I tried to use windows XP system restore and that doesn't work. Not even in safe mode.(

I follow these steps to try and reinstate his user profile: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/fix-corrupted-user-profile#1TC=windows-7

But that didn't seem to work either.

I am now trying a program called "Recuva" to try and hopefully get some if not all of his files saved.

What I need to do is save all of the info and get it to the new laptop which is on windows 8.

Normally I would just use outlook and make a backup of his .pst file but I can't do that as I cannot log in to his user profile etc...

I need major help to get this working or I am going to be up $hit's creek with no paddle.

Please help!!!

On the Windows 8 computer, you would put those files under C:\Users\MyBoss. But don't copy everything, just the files he needs, such as ".PST", DOCX, XLSX, etc. Word files, Excel files, pictures, videos. If you miss something and later he determines that he's missing something, you still have his backup laying around that you can hunt through for a missing file.

All of his files, including his Outlook .PST files, are in his user profile that you backed up to the external hard drive. They were under "C:\Documents and Settings\Boss's Name\*.*". You don't need to restore that old laptop, you just need to put it out of its misery.

Grab a flash drive (thumb drive), put it into the USB socket, and then copy the files you want, or the entire folder under \Documents and Settings\MyBoss\. Drag and drop, or copy and paste. Or you can burn them to a DVD if you have a recordable DVD laying around. A recordable CD would work if his files will fit on a 700 MB CD.
