Right now i'm having an issue with my built computer recognizing my 1tb seagate hdd. It's not listed in the bios as being there first of all. When i get on windows and go to disk management, it's there but only listed as being 3.86gb's.

I try to initialize it and get the "the request could not be performed because of i/o device error"

Am i dealing with a dead drive here?

Second of all i had a issue earlier with the mobo drivers. Against better judgment, i used the driver disc that came with the mobo. Froze the system and wouldn't boot. Endless tried to load windows 8.1. I reinstalled windows and now i'm just wondering what i need to install.

Just the drivers or the utilities as well?

If you go into disk management and right click where it says disk 0/ disk 1 for the 3.86GB drive, and click properties it will have the model number of the drive, can you confirm that this is the same as on the 1TB.

I am thinking that you are having a problem with the 1TB all together and it is not the 3.86GB drive at all. If the BIOS cannot read it, I doubt windows can see it. Did you have any data on it or was it DOA? RMA it if it is DOA, if it has data on it, you might need to try your luck with recovery techniques but I doubt you will have any luck until the BIOS sees it.

It is indeed the same model number. DIdn't even get to use it, so there's no data on it.

I pretty much am. The drive was making beeping and screeching noises. Plus, once I removed it the computer started about 5-10 seconds quicker.
