My 15 year old tech son, noticed his 4 core new processor was only using 2 cores. So he watched a walk through on how to update it to use all 4.

he went into msconfig went to boot and checked the option on top left and chose 4 cores. Restarted.
Now he gets a blue screen every time it boots up that reads: "Bad_System_Config"

We tried to restore it to a point before that, but it did not fix it.

We put in our windows install disk, went to repair, but it cannot repair it manually, only do the system restore point. Still does not work.

Cannot boot into Safe Mode either.
Got to C prompt, but had to go through the repair first so when I tried the C:/Windows/System32/ sfc /scannow it says that there is a pending repair, so I have to restart first, but to get to the C Prompt I have to go through that repair tool, so there will always be that failed auto repair.

Is there a way for me use the C prompt to uncheck that box and put the cores back to 2, in msconfig?

I think he is going to have to just destroy his stuff and just reinstall windows, but his school work is all on there (he is home schooled), so he will lose a LOT of stuff.

Please help.
Thank you.
Richard

Any way to use DOS (C:/) to update the msconfig?

Not without some voodoo magic i am unaware of.

if I7babys idea doesnt work, if you know the Drive letter assigned to the usb stick etc you can use command prompt to back up files from locations where you know things are saved I.E. "XCOPY C:\Users\YOUR SONS NAME\Documents\* H:\Documents /s /i"

Most programs (software) save files local copies of things somewhere check google for where any individual program might save to.

I cannot get to Safe Mode, blue screen's still. Tried Regular safe mode and Safe Mode with Networking. None of them load.

The restore point to a earlier time finishes successfully, however, that does not fix it, still same blue screen.

I can plug in his hard drive into my usb to save his personal files, however, his school work is on software, I don't think I can back that up and save it without loading windows.

Any way to use DOS (C:/) to update the msconfig?
Thanks,
Richard
