I am recently using my old Q6600 cpu with gigabyte G41-combo motherboard.
My brother offering me to exchange with his AMD Athlon II x4 640 and MSI 760 GM-P33.
Should I exchange my precent config with him?

Would I get better performance than my present one?

Not worth it. Get a decent cooler and overclock your chip a little. Their performance is very close, the Athlon II being just slightly faster. A mild overclock would bridge that gap, and probably surpass it. What ram do you have? 3.2ghz is generally pretty easy to hit with that chip. A little searching and you can probably find settings that should work for you. I forget what I had for my old Kentsfield x3210.

I agree that the 640 is a sidegrade, but there's more room to upgrade with an AM3 socket than a LGA775

I wouldn't upgrade an AM3 rig either. Better off saving for a new one.
