Hello all,

I currently have a 250gb 840 Evo and I'm looking to clone it to a 128gb for the OS and then use the old drive for my Steam library.. Most of the space is taken up by games, so I figured I'll delete them, clone the Evo to the new 128gb drive, and then move Steam to the old drive and redownload them there (I only have 6 games installed at the moment so it's not a huge deal).

My question is how do I actually connect the new drive for cloning. Do I need to use a free SATA port on the motherboard or can I use eSATA? And once the copy is made, am I guaranteed to be able to simply swap drives and boot up?

Solution
Backup before you do anything. Backup to an external drive.

For cloning (making an exact copy of the entire disk) you need to connect the hard disk to your present computer OR to a different computer and then use a cloning software. There are a few good free cloning software that you can download and run.

There is Acronis (free download from WD's website)

Clonezilla: http://clonezilla.org/

Apricorn (this is what I use): http://www.apricorn.com/products/software/ezgig.html

EaseUS: http://www.easeus.com/backup-software/ (I have used this) - look for the clone option.

After you clone the hard disk, use the newly cloned hard disk in place of the old hard disk.

Make a backup of the new setup.

You can use any way you want to get access to the drive, if you use cloning software it should just boot right up when you set it as teh boot device. You may have to take the old drive and set it active since you will have a drive ID collision if you have both of them installed when you boot off teh new drive, but that's as simple as going in to your drive management and telling it to bring it online so it will get a new ID.
