Will more than 60 fps look bad on a 60hz monitor?

I am just asking if I get for say 80 fps avg on a game on my 60hz 1680 by 1050 monitor, will it look that bad? I've heard of some people say that it causes "tearing" but is there some way to prevent that, like locking the frame rate or something? I don't have g-sync on my monitor and I have no clue what exactly v-sync is. Is there any way to fix the tearing if I get any???!!

Thanks.

P.S. I am getting a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 for my build this summer which may be a BIT overkill for gaming, I know, especially on a monitor like mine.

I want to point out that locking the frame rate is not always enough to avoid page tearing because it may not sync up with your screen. For this reason Vsync is recommended.

Please note that a side effect of v-sync may be increased input lag. Some users prefer to play with it off and just deal with or nor even notice the page tearing effect.

A frame rate under 60 without triple buffering on can cause the frame rate to drop 30 to keep the frames in sync with the screen. You may have to watch out for this, but most games deal with it ok.

V-sync will prevent your fps from going above 60. Which will prevent tearing. Simply keeps your fps and monitor refresh rate in sync.
Tearing is the result of their difference.

Just check the box in your game settings under video settings to turn on v-sync and you should be fine.

I'd advise against V-sync for the horrible mouse lag that it can cause as frames are delayed.

If you do notice a lot of bad tearing limiting your FPS can really help, using something like MSI afterburner will allow you to do this. Play around with what you limit it too until you find a good number.

Agreed ^^^

That kind of upgrade would be completely pointless unless your going to get a new monitor as well.
One of the main factors of high end graphics is an increase in fps. And even more, that card has 3Gb of memory, which is more than most cards because it is better at high resolutions.

Upgrade your monitor first
