Hey all. After retiring my mining rig I decided i would take a 280x for my gaming computer. The computer runs smoothly when I am not playing a high graphic demand game. When i start a game like CS:GO the menu operates fine but once I enter a server the computer would make a click sound (I think from the HD) then there would be one of three results.

First and most common is simply a crash, black screen and no response from the machine whatsoever.

Secondly is a screen tear followed by a crash.

Third and the least common occurrence is the blue screen.

PSU: 600 watt - Non modular
Processor: I5-2500K 3.30 Ghz
RAM: 8 GB
System type: 64 Bit on windows 8.1 (had tried the same thing with the 280x on windows 7. I had reformatted just after and changed to windows 8.1)

My thought is that there is possibly not enough power going to the video card. I have a spare 6 pin from the PSU which i connected to the 280x but the other 8 pins are supplied from an adapter that came with the card. One of the connections for the 8 pin goes through a case fan, and the other comes from an extension from my harddrive.

My next plan of action is to purchase a more powerful modular PSU, maybe a 620w-700w, as i think my issue is that the power is going to other pieces of hardware before reaching the GPU causing the inefficiency and eventual malfunction. My intention here is to get some advice on my plan of action or a solution to my issue.

Thanks!

Just to add I have not been getting any blue screens on my attemps on windows 8.1 just crashes.

Click sound is probably coming form the psu when it cuts the power due to the fan is stopping.
What power supply brand and model do you have?

I agree with your assumption. It doesn't sound like the power supply is providing enough power to the graphics card.

Definitely the power supply that is the issue then. You need a new better quality 650W power supply.

Is that the same one you used for your mining rig? If so it is probably shot. That brand isn't know for its reliability.

I used a 1250w PSU for the rig which was placed in a different machine all together. The only piece I reallocated is the GPU.
