Hey. I am looking to upgrade one of two components: CPU and GPU. My current CPU is a FX 6300 3.5 GHz, and my current GPU is a XFX Double D R9 270x. If I upgrade my CPU: I will get a FX 8350. If I upgrade my GPU, I will get a GTX 770. Which one should I upgrade?

A 770 will be a fairly minor upgrade over a 270x, really not worth it. I'd go for the 8350 since that will give you a decent clock speed boost, or go for 270x CF. It really depends what is holding you back, if you are CPU limited get the CPU upgrade, if you are graphics limited get a GPU upgrade. Really not up to us to decide for you.

My issue is that I do not know what could hold me back, so that is why I ask. GPU for those heavy graphical games, or CPU for AI complexive games? I honestly can't decide.

What IS holding you back? Not what will be holding you back.

If you can't answer that question then you shouldn't waste money upgrading yet.

I'll be honest, nothing is holding me back right now. But for next gen games, I wonder what new technology will require more of.

You could overclock your CPU and get a nice performance increase.
Bottlenecks for Beginners
THW is always in need of bottleneck explanation, so here is my take on the subject matter. Your "bottleneck" will be dependent on the software you run and your display. For gaming: Your CPU handles the game engine and will be able to make a... See full content
