Comcast internet randomly drops

Hey all, I've been having this problem for about two weeks now, even after spending countless hours on the phone with Comcast, swapping out the modem, AND them sending out a technician.

So now that we've established Comcast's immense level of incompetence, I'll proceed to explain my problem in more detail. The problem is most noticeable when playing online games, I'll be in the middle of a game when suddenly I lose the connection. It comes back online very quick, but obviously I lose anything I was doing on the game. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, and sometimes it happens every 20 minutes, either way, there is clearly something wrong with my internet connection.

I thought for sure that the problem would be solved by switching out the router, but of course it did nothing. Any ideas or suggestions for what I need to do?

You have it wired directly to the Modem without a router in between? If that is the case then your ISP is messing with the connection, OR, Xbox Live doesn't know how to handle a non networked client... though rare for something like that to happen, it happened in Hawken.

IF you do have a router connected in between the Xbox and the Modem, i suggest performing the proper port forwarding. PortForward.com can help with how to setup your port forwarding with your router correctly.

A brief Google search should reveal all necessary ports required to open for Xbox Live.

What are you gaming on? PC, Console? What brand Router did you go with/have before? What KIND of modem did Comcast provide (IE: Converged Phone/Modem or just Modem)? What game specifically? Were ports forwarded correctly? Did you setup the connection correctly to the Router?

With what little information provided, even a Comcast Technician can't fix your connectivity Router side, granted they have full on access to the modem, but that doesn't tell them if you've set up port forwarding, or configured your devices properly.

Best i can do is ask the above questions. The sooner you can relay those answers, the faster a solution can be worked out...

Those store bought router boxes are rubbish for large scale demand, i built my own Router out of leftover PC parts from a few budget PC upgrades, and a nifty Sempron single core, MAYBE, i'll upgrade it to a dual or quad, but for now it is completely more than enough, with 8GB ram and two Gigabit NICs, use of Switches necessary. for Wifi an AP is required, although i have heard of users using a Wifi Card to broadcast the wifi, i prefer something a bit more robust, like the ASUS RT-N65U.
