Start up problem - none of the fans work

When I start up my computer the ROG led lights up and the start and reset buttons light up however nothing else works. The fans do not spin the external power button does not work. I have a ASUS MAXIMUS VI FORMULA OC motherboard. What am I doing wrong. The only thing I can think of is that I put a 6 pin power connecter into the 8pin power slot on my motherboard. My psu is 750w.

Solution
A 6-pin connector? That must be one of the PCIe power connectors, and is likely the source of your issue. Do you not have an 8-pin EPS connector on your PSU to plug into the slot? What PSU do you have? If you don't have an 8-pin, you should have a 4-pin connector at the least (it's a square connector) which you can plug into one half of the 8-pin slot.

However even if that was the problem which I tried fixing, why are non of my chasis fans working which connect directly to the psu? The only things that work in this are the ROG led, the led in the start and reset button, and the OC panel in my chasis. Note: I haven't even gotten to Bios yet.

OKAY SO MY CURRENT SITUATION, I actually could not find an other 4 pin connecters,
1) can I leave the 8pin connecter with nothing in it
2) Everything seems to turn on when nothing is in the 8-pin
3) THANK YOU SO MUCH

Okay, I had a closer look at that particular motherboard, and now I see that it has a 4 pin and an 8 pin socket at the top left of the board; that threw me a bit, as I'm used to just seeing an 8 pin or 4 pin socket. The additional socket is there to (potentially) provide extra stability when overclocking.

So, would I be right in thinking you have the 4 pin socket currently filled, and the 8 pin socket empty? In theory it should work with just that plugged in, but it'll likely limit the overclocking function of the board (and potentially other functions - I don't know for sure).

Just for curiosity sake, what model of PSU do you have? I'm surprised that a 750W PSU doesn't have an 8-pin EPS connector.

Uh so I haven't changed anything in my configuration, yet when I power on my desktop it works for 5 seconds and then crashes and then powers on by itself again and works.
Also the video feed is not working.
My PSU is http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0045L4BJ6/ref=asc_df_B0045L4BJ63070722?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=pg-401-34-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395097&creativeASIN=B0045L4BJ6

The error code blinks between a lot of number at first then the computer crashes, and then the second time it turns on it stops at 64, A2, and then stays at 99

Okay, that PSU has a 4 + 4 set up with the EPS cable. By that I mean it has one cable that splits into two 4 pin square shaped connectors; this allows it be used both with motherboards with a single 4 pin socket on the motherboard, or an 8 pin slot (where you put the two 4 pin plugs side by side).

If you haven't already, plug both of these 4 pin connectors into the 8 pin socket at the top left of the motherboard, leaving the 4 pin socket up there completely empty. Try it like that, and see if it does any better.

I did that, but still after like 5 seconds after pressing the power button the desktop turns off, and then turns on again (this time it stays on). Also the error code is still 99 is there a problem with the graphics card, because everything else is working except for the display. Even the OC panel that I am using is working and showing the temp of the cpu and such. What should I do to try and fix this error?

The first time you turn it on it's quite normal for it to power on, then off, then on again (mine does that everytime it has been switched off on the back of the PSU - there's a reason for it, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is).

Error code 99 "Super IO Initialization" is a bit of a tricky one to troubleshoot as people have many different issues (one example being having a 6 pin in the 8 pin EPS socket). Out of curiosity, what display are you trying to use? It's not unheard of for a TV that's being used as a display to cause this problem.

Does your CPU have integrated graphics? If yes, try removing the graphics card and plugging your display into one of the motherboards ports. This could at least help rule out the graphics card.

I'm not going to lie to you, this could be a tricky issue to fix (and possibility beyond my ability), so if you haven't already, you should probably make a post on the ROG forums about your issues. There are some real experts there on the particular oddities of the ROG motherboards. Here's a link to the VI motherboards section of their forums: http://rog.asus.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?155-Maximus-VI-Motherboards If you search on there you'll find some others with similar issues as well.

Thank you for all your helpful advice,
For my display I was using originally using a tv as a display however than I switched to one of my dad's old monitors (one that only had a VGA connection so I had to convert from VGA to displayport.
I will try the graphics card thing tomorrow, but once again thank you very much.
