Hit it with a hammer once and then recycle it? No but seriously look at the SMART to get the details. Get any data off now and from the SMART report, determine if it is reliable at all. If not I'd go ahead and recycle it.
No, you can't fix physical problems (besides the circuit board). It would come to replacing components such as platters, read/write heads, etc, which is prohibitively expensive labor wise.
