How do I get Win8 working on a new motherboard?

I have a pre-built Asus PC that came with Windows 8.
My plan is to upgrade my fx 8350 to an i7 which means I need a new motherboard.
But what should I do exactly to transfer the windows OS? It came with the PC, and I got no disc whatsoever.

you won't be able to since you're trying to move a OS to an entirely diff system and the initial OS installation on your outgoing hardware was configured to that chipset when it was installed. You will need to do a fresh install.

Go here and download the product key finder first to find out what your product key is.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

then go here you will be able to download either windows 8 or windows 8.1 onto an iso or a thumb drive

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

since you have windows 8 download the windows 8 version and not the windows 8.1 version, because a windows 8 product key will not work with an windows 8.1 installation. You can always update to windows 8.1 through windows update after you install windows 8.

My PC came with Windows 8 but I did do the 8.1 update awhile ago. The software you linked to only shows me the product key for Windows 8.1 so should I download the 8.1 install file?

no, you have to download the windows 8 version from the microsoft website. if your pc came with windows 8 then the product key is windows 8 even if you updated to windows 8.1 via windows update the product key is still windows 8. whatever initially came on your system is the product key for that version. So you said it came with Windows 8 then you have a windows 8 product key, if your system came with Windows 8.1 then you would have a windows 8.1 product key.

Microsoft will allow windows 8 users to update to windows 8.1 via windows update, but they won't allow users to use a windows 8 product key to install windows 8.1. I don't know why that is, but they won't allow it for some reason, because if you try to use a windows 8 product key to install windows 8.1 it will say invalid product key.

It says I can't use the key to install a retail version of Windows 8. I assume its because the key I have is for the OEM version?

You can always try using what they call a dummy key to use temporarily on the initial product activation and then change it to the windows 8 oem product key that came with your desktop after you install it. these are kms keys that Microsoft gives out, to temporarly bypass the initial product activation for people having issues with their product key, but you will have to change it to the oem product key within 30 days or else windows 8 will deactivate. whatever version your pc came with use that product key below.

Windows 8 (core): 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT

Windows 8 Pro: XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

You are likely to waste a lot of time and still end up with Windows 8.1 that can't be activated with your OEM product key (if that is what you have).
Here is a revolutionary suggestion: just plug in your hard disk or SSD and let Windows 8 detect all the drivers for your new motherboard. No need yet to download ISO images and installing from scratch. There is a good chance that you will have a working but UN-ACTIVATED system in a few minutes. This should work, not just for 30 days but "forever" AFAIK. It's slightly annoying because of the watermark at the bottom of the screen, of course, but not illegal.

To have a properly activated Windows 8 or 8.1 on your new motherboard you will almost certainly HAVE to buy a new copy, OEM or retail.

But will the windows on my hard drive detect the new motherboard successfully though? I read other people had blue screen when they switched motherboard while using the same hard drive without reinstalling windows.

>>> I read other people had blue screen when they switched motherboard while using the same hard drive without reinstalling windows.

That must be true, then, if other people say so. Why are you asking other people ?

Look, there is no written guarantee.
Anyway, it's not really a good permanent solution, it's kind of messy and sometimes the Metro/New apps don't work any more. On second thoughts, I'm not even recommending it now. The only good thing about it is that it takes very little time.
I thought the alternative from the other guy was very time-consuming and very unlikely to succeed. You will spend hours first downloading an ISO for Windows 8, installing it, TRYING to activate it with your OEM key - good luck ! - then you would have to do the upgrade to Windows 8.1 which takes ages ...

So therefore, my advice is the same as before:
To have a properly activated Windows 8 or 8.1 on your new motherboard you will almost certainly HAVE to buy a new copy, OEM or retail. There are other solutions which we can't discuss here.

BTW, regarding 'other people' and blue screens. I have never seen a BSOD in Windows 8 yet, and I swap HDDs around all the time between motherboards, from ASUS, AsRock, Gigabyte with all sorts of chipsets from Intel and AMD.
I can't recall any occasion where Windows didn't boot up, although as I said, some of the apps no longer work, that also happens when you install a different video card.

Time consuming? yes probability of working? a decent chance. it's been done by a lot of people doing that method and it has worked. Windows 8 does give blue screen of deaths but not in the classic fashion people are used to seeing. it will prompt a frown face saying something is wrong with your hardware. I've ran into it a couple myself.

lol, I actually like the win8 blue screen, I got one myself when I tried overclocking without a decent PSU, and it gave me a blue screen of death. But instead of showing a full screen of scary codes and numbers like previous windows versions it just gave me a simple line of words saying something wrong happened and I just restarted.

You're right, I forgot about that.
I agreed 100% with your first post at the top of the thread. Not so much with some of the later comments, especially that OEM keys can be transferred from one motherboard to another.
But I could be wrong.

I don't know why the OP has not gone and at least tried something. He may have got stuck at the point where he couldn't download the OS from Microsoft without a retail key. Maybe we'll never hear from him again. Actually, I would like to know the outcome of this experiment.

Well, I haven't got the motherboard yet. If I buy i7+motherboard combo, its going to be 700 canadian dollars with tax included. I just can't commit so much money without first finding out if I need to get a new retail version of windows disc or not. I don't have any windows install disc at home right now. All the windows I got for my PC and laptop are OEM versions, and they didn't come with a disc.

If the downloaded win8 didn't work after I switched my motherboard, that would leave my computer unusable for awhile since I don't have any money spare to buy a retail copy of windows at the moment.
