Hello,

I am planning to purchase a new GPU to replace my current XFX 5870 1GB.

Previously I was recommended to get the 7950, Sapphire 3GB 7950 seems to caught my interest.

My current specs are:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Editio
Motherboard: Asus Crosshair IV Formula
PSU: 850W Corsair CMPSU-850HXUK
RAM: 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR3

I did some basic research on comparison websites to see how the 7950 goes up against the 5870 and there appears to be a significant boost in performance that I like.

The only problem I have right now is I don't know if I will experience this performance with the new 7950 with my current specs and CPU.

I do not want to upgrade my CPU right now but so I would like to ask if anyone was in similar situation or knows someone who could advise whether this will be a beneficial upgrade for me with visible performance upgrade.

Thank you,

Milo

That CPU doesn't bottleneck a 7970 and some cases greater, that said there is ALWAYS a bottleneck, but this case is nothing to worry about.

What would the bottleneck in my case be? Can you see any possibilities?

With AMD CPU's, there is always a bottleneck, with these CPU's and others it's marginal. Low-end AMD CPU's are seriously effected. I doubt you will notice the bottleneck, it's very very small.

Aside from the 7950 are there any other AMD graphic cards that could be better suited? like a newer generation

R9 280, that is the rebrand of the 7950, just the newer generation.

You'd be perfectly fine in the majority of games. The CPU would only bottleneck in super cpu intensive stuff like huge Starcraft 2 battles, RTS, or MMO. But it'll certainly still be playable.

And unless you're getting the hd7950 super cheap you might as well get the newer model r9 280 or even the r9 280x (7970 rebranded)

I love my hd7950, been playing anything on ultra for a year and a half now haha.

I recently bought a 7950 and I didnt see much of a noticeable improvement over the 5870 therefore I would prefer to pay a little extra and get something with a more quick.

I was curious about these r9 graphic cards. So they are literally a re-branded 7970s? Would that be a better option than 7950? I am just looking for a simple upgrade for the next 1-2 years.

yeah just a rebrand, you're fine with the regular hd7950, I've been playing stuff on ultra for a year and a half now on one, should be good for many years on 1080p

I will most likely be getting R9 280x as I had the 7950 returned.

What is is a good r9 280x to go for? I be getting one from ebay (used) up to around £180. I am looking mainly at their base clock speeds and trying to find one thats over 970 Mhz.

Ones I found so far:

Gigabyte R9 280x (rev2.0)
ASUS_AMD_Radeon_R9_280X_DirectCU_II_TOP
MSI AMD Radeon R9 280X GAMING 3G TwinFrozr IV

I like the Gigabyte one since it has 3 fans, if your case can fit it. If not, the Asus one with 2 fans is fine as well.

I thought about getting another 7950 off ebay too, they're going for cheap on there.
