Second mobo CPU power connector?

Just bought the ASUS Z-97WS mobo and Seasonic Platinum 520W PS.

Problem is, there is only one power cx cable compatible with the 2 EATX12V connectors near the PSU. Do I need to connect power to BOTH of these? It seems strange that the PSU wouldn't come with 2 compatible cables if two were needed (the others are 12V PCI connectors). Thanks!

Hi

Does this motherboard have two atx 12V 8 pin connectors ?
( not many motherboard or medium size psu support this)
Or one 8 pin atx 12V socket on motherboard

And psu only has 4 pin atx 12V plug instead of 2 x 4 pin plugs which clip together to fit in 8 pin socket

Googling on asus z797 did not get any results

I just bought this PSU. I like the specs and it's good enough.

I'm trying to determine if that second socket connection SHOULD be powered? If so, I'll get another cable.

Some preliminary research suggests that the second socket might be for additional power for overclocking? I just need to know if I HAVE to connect it up.

Hi

You may get away with one 8 pin atx12V cable if you are using a i3 CPU but I suspect you are using a i5 or i7 CPU and you risk damaging motherboard if you don't fit second 8 pin atx12V connector and use a psu designed for 2 8 pin connectors

I have seen 4 pin atx 12V motherboard socket & plug burnt before ( old P 4 775 CPU ) it caused intermittent start up problems .
After repairs and replacing plug it has survived for a few more years

This is a new setup: ASUS Z97-based mobo, 520W PS, and i7-4770K. I will run at most one graphics card (maybe not even that), so I think I have enough power.

This PS seems sufficiently powerful, but it's specs indicate it comes with only 1 cable of the type "CPU 8/4 PIN".

But it still have 2 free connections for a 4x2 "CPU or PCI-E" cable. So if I have to power the second CPU socket, I'll pick up another cable.
