Computer randomly restarting

Hey all, this is the first time posting to the site, but I have used quite a few answered threads to help me diagnose PC problems in the past, however the current problem I have has me stumped. It is completely and utterly random. Sometimes it restarts twice in 10 minutes, other times I can go 3 or 4 days and be perfectly fine. It can happen during a game or while completely idle on the desktop.

----------

So after completely formatting my computer in order to clean off all the junk on it, I started having a mysterious problem where my computer just shuts off randomly then restarts.

-No bluescreen
-No stop code or DUMP
-No helpful errors in event viewer aside for the standard error 41 power failure.

Now I've tried narrowing down the problem as much as I can, but it doesn't seem like anything specific is the culprit:

- I tried swapping individual RAM sticks to no avail. I tested them using the standard windows memory diagnostic and memtest86+ multiple times with no problems.

- I made sure my temperatures were okay. My GPU idles around 36-40C and maxes around 60C. My CPU idles around 38-42C and maxes around 58C. While mildly high, they are fairly normal.

- I thought it might be the PSU failing, but the completely random nature of the problem doesn't seem right. Not to mention the issue is not getting any worse over the last month. But I ran OCCT for 2 hours straight and the voltages were completely normal and there were no power issues.

- I believe a hardrive issue isn't the culprit as there are no noises or other issues I've found with that. But off course, I have scanned for bad sectors and whatnot. Completely fine and not fragmented.

- Lastly I have checked the Window's installation by using the sfc /SCANNOW command with no problems.

----------

So with all this said, does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? I will say that I have been having problems with my 200mm fan lately as it has begun to rattle a bit, but I turned it down and it seems alright. Could there be a problem with it shorting out?

Could it be a software issue with MSI Afterburner (2.3.3) or my AMD driver? Avast! Free edition? Otherwise this computer is mostly clean.

Could it be that my CPU's temperature censors are off? Because I have set my computer to shut off when it reaches 80C and I have noticed that every once in awhile my CPU temps spike between 40 and 60 on occasion. However this is rare and I've never once seen it reach 75C+.

Thanks for the help.

System Specs:

OS: Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium
MOBO: Gigabyte X58A-UD5
CARD: AMD Radeon 6870 14.4 Driver (Not overclocked)
CPU: Intel i7 960 3.20GHz (Not overclocked)
RAM: Mushkin 2GB x 3
SOUND: HT Omega Claro+
PSU: 1000W TruePower Quattro

The shutdown is sudden and hard as if a power failure which points the finger at something basic like the PSU or the motherboard. I would try another PSU if I had one around. And yes a shorting fan could very well do it! that, or a loose power connection somewhere, but the issue sounds power related somehow.

I could try plugging my PSU directly into the wall. It's possible the power strip is having issues. The thing is ancient. However, I doubt that would be it.

Yeah, but there is honestly not much I can do here. I don't own another power-supply that would work and the problem is far to random and infrequent for me to test specific causes or to warrant me buying a new PSU.

I mean, I ran OCCT rigorously for two hours and my PC didn't even flinch. I just don't see how a failing PSU could stomach that load.

I suppose, I'll remove extra hard rives and maybe unplug a few extra fans and see if that makes a difference.

Hey did you ever figure out what your problem was? You just explained the exact problem I am having. The only thing I know so far is the "Kernel-Power" (41) thing is the issue.

I noticed that we have almost exactly the same Graphics Card. Mine is a HD Radeon 6970 and my motherboard is a Gigabyte.
