The significance is that you have 5% more performance paying 65 MORE DOLLARS.
For that $349, I would go this BEAST: http://www.ncixus.com/products/?usaffiliateid=1000031504&sku=93750&vpn=R9-290A-EDFD&manufacture=XFX&promoid=1141

And if you say GTX770 is better than 290 for 10$ thats completely bullshit.
GTX 770 will outperform R9 280x in most games at 1080p

R9 280x and GTX 770 are pretty same in games. R9 280x performs better in some games ( like BF4) while GTX 770 performs better in other games (like Crysis 3 , Bioshock Infinite)
Though the GTX 770 2GB outperforms R9 280x 3GB in almost all games @ 1080p

The difference between them is not much, which makes R9 280x a better deal in terms of price/performance value.

My vote goes for 280x. As this month's Graphic Cards for the money said about 280x:

"You can expect playable performance through 1920x1080 in most games and respectable frame rates through 2560x1440 in some titles, all with taxing detail settings enabled. At this price point, it outshines the $330 GeForce GTX 770, $250 GeForce GTX 760, and $250 Radeon R9 280."

All the months before that till the time the GTX 770 was released the GTX 770 was listed in "[Month]'s best Graphic Card" as the best $300-$400 card. I don't you should pick the 280X because it was listed for the first time as the GTX 770's title just because it was released from it huge price spike.

In my opinion as-well as many others the GTX 770 remains the top performer at 1080p between the 280X and the GTX 770. Benchmarks, reviewers and un-boxers claim this. Evidence? go find it. I hate finding evidence for people just google it.

Both are so similar in performance, but 280x is 65$ cheaper. AMD wins.

The R9 280X and GTX 770 performs quite similar, with R9 280X performs better in some games. If the radeon card is on sale for a less price than GTX 770, get R9 280X.

Sorry, but this is not what I meant.

The difference between GTX 770 & R9 280x @1080p gaming is like 2-6fps in favor of GTX 770 which keeps on shrinking as resolution goes higher.
http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/61201-amd-radeon-r9-280x-vs-nvidia-geforce-gtx-770-4k/

The GTX 770 costs about $50-60 more than R9 280x.

Is GTX 770 worth the extra 2-6fps? It all depends on budget of OP

But all I wanted to say that either GTX 770 or R9 280x, both are great cards in their price range
