Computer completely freezes - Just got a new Motherboard and Processor

Hey guys.

About a week ago I got a new SSD which I installed without any hassle and everything was running smoothly. 3 days ago I got a new motherboard and processor (ASUS H97M-PLUS & Intel i7 4790 respectively) and I've gotten 1 freeze a day. One while watching a video, one while browsing, and one while gaming. During a freeze sound cuts out and nothing reacts. Ctrl, alt, delete does nothing and I have to hard reset. My CPU runs at about 35c when idle and 60-65c when hot (stock cooler). My original CPU setup was gtx260 and i7 920 which use a lot more volts than my current setup so I don't think it's the PSU (it's rated @ 750w).

Is the motherboard/cpu faulty? Should I contact the manufacturer or the seller (intel, asus, or newegg)?

Solution
Get every driver except the manual and the BIOS.
For Uilities, look at all of them and determine of you need them. E.g Asus home cloud is most likely not used by all.

Maybe but I don't think so. How would I go about doing that?

Do I download and update all of them? There are 32 different files.

(If updating your drivers doesn't fix this problem) > Did you move the HDDs and/or SDDs from the old motherboard to the new one without re-installing the OS? From my understanding, you need to install a fresh copy of the OS on an HDD on the new motherboard.

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it. I will download and update everything. If I get a freeze I will update immediately, if not then I will update after a few days.

I got the SSD a few days earlier so I installed Windows 7 then installed the CPU/Motherboard. I did install a fresh copy when I did it.

You installed Windows 7 on the SSD on the new motherboard? (What I mean is, did you have the SSD connected to the new motherboard when you installed the OS?)

BIOS Updates didn't do anything except actually breaking my computer lol. All USB slots died with the Intel Chipset update. Had to System Restore several times to get back and my computer froze a few hours later. Today I had another freeze so I completely formatted and reinstalled Windows. Haven't had any issues so far but I haven't used it long enough for it to freeze yet.

Will keep you guys updated.

Welp, it happened again after I had windows completely reinstalled. I'm assuming this means a hardware failure although I can't be sure if it's the processor or motherboard. Going to call newegg tomorrow.

Called newegg, I have to go through ASUS and INTEL now. I ran memtest86 with 9 passes and 0 errors. Switched out 2/4 ram as well. Will see what happens. I'm 85% sure it's the motherboard, 10% the RAM, and 5% the CPU. Instead of just freezes it can now be a random shutoff or restart. The frequency hasn't really changed - I had nothing the day before yesterday but a shutoff and reset yesterday within an hour of each other.

Funny how memtest86 ran all night and there was no freezing.

Pretty much devoted today to solving this. Called ASUS support and (after 3 hours) they told me it was a faulty motherboard and to contact newegg. I contacted Intel (support was much better) and I ran the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool. I found that even though I have the 4790 which is locked at 3.66ghz the motherboard was somehow making it run at 4.001ghz. I went into BIOS and found that for whatever reason "Turbo" is automatically turned on and increases the frequency even though it's locked. The Intel guy said it was probably the Graphics Card, Motherboard, CPU/PSU in that order. I really, really doubt it's the graphics card and he didn't really think it was the CPU or PSU although it's possible.

Anyway, I ran Open Broadcaster Software along with a game and to see if it would happen again (it seems to definitely occur more during overall performance tests and after using for a long time). And it restarted.

Contacted newegg and I got an RMA for the motherboard. Going to return it on Monday. Probably going to get a different model now that I have the chance.

Your i7 4790 is meant to be able to turbo up to 4Ghz if you need the performance, it is set by default by the motherboard to allow that. This is due to Intel Turbo Boost Technology.
Do you have another ram kit you can test? What ram do you have?
Have you done a memtest on your ram.

Oh, very helpful, thank you. I have 6 RAM sticks and 4 slots. I switched out 2 earlier today, going to switch out the other 2 tonight. I ran memtest last night and it had 0 errors after 12 passes.

I don't believe so. What do you mean by XMP profiles?

Welp. Replaced the motherboard and it's still happening. It's either RAM, PSU, or Video Card, which is weird since I had 0 problems before I got a new mobo/proc. Could also be heating. I'm at 60-65c at load. Going to check out that avenue first.

I've gotten a new heatsink and moved it to a cooler and environment STILL freezing.... Wtf..

Really have no idea what to do. Really don't want to get a new PSU.

I changed back to my old hard drive to test if I would crash (from my SSD) and I'm still crashing. This means that it's definitely not software (unless the very, very basic drivers required to run the motherboard are doing it) or my SSD.

I removed my Discrete graphics card and I'm currently using the Intel HD4600 integrated video (which is actually pretty good!). Although I haven't had just a solid freeze where nothing on my screen moves I HAVE had freezes where I can't do anything (like before) except my screen also flashes and jitters with random colours. I'm assuming this is just the integrated graphics' version of the freezing.

I also changed out the memory again and ran memtest86 again for 11h with 0 errors.

Conclusion: It is unlikely that it is the CPU because apparently this isn't how CPU errors manifest themselves, this almost definitely isn't RAM since memtest passed. THEREFORE, IT IS LIKELY THE PSU. Why did it suddenly stop working when I got a new motherboard/CPU? No idea, maybe it isn't compatible with the new stuff (4-5years old and generic brand). Going to do more research of this and eventually I'll probably get a new PSU. If it's not the PSU I'm going to re-evaluate although it HAS to be the ram, I can't see it being the PSU.

More money to spend zzzz
