Switching motherboards, can I still keep my 800GB of files?

I'm considering upgrading to a motherboard that supports USB 3.0. If I do find a better motherboard to upgrade to, does that mean that my files are all lost and I have to redownload all of them?

I'm using a dell issued motherboard that came with the computer I bought - the Dell Studio XPS 7100. My friend has a windows 7 OS installation disc that I can use to install a new operating system.

yes and no, it depends on the size of your drive because as you move files onto the os partition it would become full and you may need to resize the partitions several times before you are completely finished.

You can keep all of your files.

Just create a partition on your disk and move all of the files you desire to keep onto that partition before the upgrade.

Of course all programs will need to be reinstalled with the new os but if you have the orig installs you can keep those too.

So let me get this right.

I can create a partition that can divide 800 GB of space for all of my files, and the rest as disk space for the new OS installation.

I then install the new OS into the partition,

I then move all the files from the 800GB partition into the new partition with the OS installed.

Is that basically it?
