Hi, I am a former console player (well, not former until I get my pc) and I am wanting to join the the pc community. I have found some good builds and was wondering if it would be a good idea to save money for accessories by buying used parts (Example: I could get a Video Graphics card from $170 and instead buy it used at Amazon for $130). It would also help me get a game as for now I only have Battlefield 3 which runs absolutely terrible on the laptop I am using now. This thing can hardly run Minecraft. And to think I thought $200 was expensive for a computer. Ha.

I personally do not recommend used parts. Sure you can save some money by buying used. But most of used parts have little to no warranty. While you can buy brand new parts that have several months or several years of warranty by the manufacturer. For example, my power supply has a 5 year warranty.

When you buy a used part you don't know how it was used or abused previously either. Would you buy a used console? While you might say you would buy a used console, most consoles are not opened and parts switched out like in a PC.

What would you say poses as the biggest threat in that?

Both not having a reliable/real warranty and not knowing how the part was used are very important. For example you buy a used graphics card. But it turns out that the person before had overclocked it and ran the fans at 100% til the card is almost dead. You buy it to save $30 and it works for a week or two and quits working. The seller gave you a one week warranty or something like that. Well, time to buy another graphics card.

I'm sure we can do better here - more performance and reliability for the same or less cost.

If you could help me do that, that would be fantastic. I am willing to spend more, I'm just worried about having to spend 100 and windows 8 and then keyboard and a mouse.
