I have been running my system for around six months now it has never crashed. However I checked my CPU temp today (stock cooler) and the gigabyte bios said it was running at 91 degrees c. I am aware that this is nit a safe running temperature especially at idle, but I don't know what is causing it! Any help would be great!

Solution
I would suggest two things;

1) Re-apply a new layer of thermal paste.

2) If still running super hot still, Get a Cooler Master hyper 212 EVO, That CPU cooler is so good for the price, it will solve your issue.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply, just wanted to ask which thermal compound is recommended?

BIOS usually does not support sleep states so "idle" in BIOS is actually full-load on one core.

That said, it should not be enough to get anywhere near 90C even with the stock HSF when installed properly.

Making sure the push-pin retention clip goes in straight and is fully seated before and while pushing those pins can be a little tricky and verifying if they went in right is nearly impossible without taking the board out of the case. Those things can easily be installed improperly without any immediately obvious visual or mechanical signs.

Thanks for the reply. Hmmm the push pins look like they are installed ok from the cutout at the back of the case. There is no movement to the heat all. I am going to try and reinstall it when the new thermal compound arrives but it looks ok, could it be a BIOS glitch?

Hi Guys
Update: I have adjusted the damn push pins and this has brought my CPU temp down to a still unusual but much better than before 60 degrees. I'm going to replace the thermal compound late this week to see if that helps. Thank you for all the help! I've also rearranged the air flow setup in my system which I think has helped too.

There are a few activity monitors inbuilt and for separate download but I can't find one that gives me temperature readings. The system does boot into the OS at 90 degrees c (according to the bios) so I'm not sure what to think.

Well my Hackintosh is configured as a late 2008 mac pro if that helps. The temp sensors that the app has detected are for my ssd and hdd. I'm using menu meters thermometer in my menu bar. The thermometer does not give me an exact reading but it has a graphical indicator which looks low.
