Hi

I know I'm one of the many who has this question. I looked at other threads but nothing came with a good solution for me.

I want a good gaming headset under €80 with superb comfort and very good audio quality. I found the Steelseries Siberia V2 and I think I'm going to get a pair but I don't know which version. I can get the 3,5mm jack version for €55 and the frost white USB for €80. I play FPS and my motherboard is a Asus Maximus Hero VI with very good sound card built in. I was searching for a surround headset but these are just above my budget.

Which pair do I need? Or any other good headsets?!

Solution

yes mate in games that...
for that build tthe 35mm jack version is the better option as you will get lower latency through the audio jacks in the back of the pc.
plug it into the front of the pc and you will get signal bleeding regardless of whether you use usb or the 35mm jacks.

with 35mm jacks you also get the option of adding a dac to the audio which will give superior sound to the usb.

The problem is that I don't have much money to spent. My maximum is €80. My motherboard has a SupremeFX audiochip so I'm not planning to get sound cards and/or an external dac for a while.

They are both above my budget. Maybe I'm planning to get the Siberia V2 USB 7.1 but at the moment I don't have that amount of money. Aren't there any other similar things for less money?

You think this would be the best solution for me? I can get the normal 3,5mm now and next month the 7.1 sound card :)

you dont need a 7.1 surround card any of your headsets as they all do virtual surround via stereo output.
there are a few 7.1 headsets that have 3+ speakers in each headphone cup but genrally the sound quality isnt great and in real terms often worse than a stereo headset.
your onboard sound by asus is as good as most midrange sound cards and some high end solutions so thats not needed either.
games like bf3/4 use a sound engine that creates a virtual space specifically for stereo headsets and works well.

So I don't need the ss usb sound card for surround sound during gaming? I mostly play bf4 and want a good headset with good enough audio to locate from where it comes. You know, no backstabbing anymore ;)

no mate like i said most headsets are stereo and use virtual surround via the onboard audio or soundcard or even the headset itself in the case of the logitech g930's which i have. i have to disable the 7.1 to get the best quality from bf3/4's own virtual surround engine. basically i have to turn my headset into a stereo headset to allow the game to enable 7.1 surround on them. odd but true...
if i dont i still get 7.1 surround but its not as accurate or as clear and spacious as the games own engine.

Whether you prefer surround sound or stereo sound is really a matter of personal preference.

A headset with surround sound uses virtual technology in order to make our ears believe that they hear something in a certain direction. Keep in mind that headsets may be branded as 7.1; however, consoles only use 5.1 so 7.1is a bit of a gimmick.

While a good quality gaming headset does this very well, one with poor quality may be better replaced by a simple stereo headset. This is because a stereo headset, in general, will have better sound quality because they place emphasis on 2 quality channels instead of many. Because today's games have built-in virtual surround sound that apply to these channels there are many gamers who prefer this type of setup

If you're using strictly a USB headset for PC like the Logitech G930, then there is no need of extra sound card as these types of headsets circumvent the sound card and basically have their own sound card and create their own virtual surround sound.

If you're not using a USB headset for the PC, then for the most part your onboard sound is good if you purchased a decent motherboard. For those who have a motherboard with built-in Realtek/Via/FX with 5channels or above you probably are wasting your money.

You can hear left or right with any headset, but not if it comes from behind or in front of you. Am I correct?

So you are saying that a stereo headset is good enough for FPS games? What's the point of a surround sound headset then? Ow, you already answered :)

My motherboard has a SupremeFX audiochip. That means I'm good with a analog headset to still be able to get good audio and locate the enemies in bf4?

So from what you said... I should get the Siberia V2 analog and still be able to get surround(-ish) sound from the in-game engine without spending money on external sound cards or expensive 7.1 headets?

yes mate in games that have there own surround sound engines you will get surround audio over a stereo headset.
bf3/4 crysis1/2/3 and pretty much any decent fps will have some sort of surround feature. even cod.
