can you put a pcie 1.0 in a pcie 16 slot

I need as many usable PCIe slots as I can get. For example I’m looking at motherboards with 6 PCI-e slots, most if not all have three “SLI ready” 3x PCI-Express 3.0/2.0 x16 Slots (run at x16 or dual x8 or x8/x4/x4), 3x PCI-Express 2.0 x1 Slots. If I use one slot for graphic could I use the other two PCI-Express 3.0/2.0 x16 Slots for anything else? Giving me 5x PCI-Express 2.0 x1 Slots…

Yes, but it's more than likely that the graphics card will cover one of the free slots, so make sure that you buy a board that has enough room for 5 cards + a GPU.

Thanks for the quick reply! I’m looking at the Asus MAXIMUS VI FORMULA LGA1150/ Intel Z87; it looks like it has a lot of room. I’m building a new media center and need the PCIe-e slots for tuner cards.

It depends on the motherboard. My Asrock board will not work with certain PCIe x1 cards installed in an x16 slot, whereas my EVGA board has no problems at all. I would plan on using an x1 slot for your x1 card to be safe. I would call ASUS and make sure to be safe. Also, download their motherboard owner's manual because it often tells you what's compatible in terms of PCIe configurations and what isn't.

Well I'm using an x1 wifi card in an x16 slot with my Asus board ATM, so I'm fairly confident that a high-end board like that will support it as well.
