I want to connect a wi-fi router to my Verizon router so that I can improve my wi-fi signal in the house. I already have an Ethernet cable running from the router to another floor -- I connected it to my DVR to improve Netflix streaming -- so I am going to take advantage of that. From the research I've done, I think the following are the general steps. Can anyone confirm that I'm on the right track?
1. Turn off wireless setting on Verizon router (I don't need it if I'm setting up a new wifi access point.)
2. Connect a laptop to the new router and change the IP address to something outside the Verizon range for DHCP address -- e.g. 192.168.5.1. And, disable DHCP on new router.
3. Connect my DVR to the new router (so, Ethernet from Verizon to new router, and Ethernet from new router to DVR.)
4. Power-cycle everything.
One other question: if I were to leave the Verizon wi-fi on, how would things work for something like my iPad which accesses the wireless network? If I were using the iPad near the Verizon router, and then I move upstairs, do I have to connect to a different wifi network? Or is there a way to use names so that it automatically picks up the wi-fi with the strongest signal?
Thanks in advance!
