Asus H61 - Update BIOS?

Hey everyone,

I've had my ASUS p8H61-M LX3 (B3 revision) paired with an i3 2120 for about 2 years now. I use it to play games, and after having upgraded to a gtx 660, I noticed some demanding games like GTA IV or Watch dogs are slightly bottlenecked by my CPU;

I was thinking about buying an i5 to upgrade. Preferably the i5 3470 (I have no intention to overclock) and stay with this motherboard.
According to ASUS' list right here:
http://support.asus.com/Cpusupport/List.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=P8H61-M%20LX3&p=1&s=39
My current BIOS (0501) does support some Ivy Bridge i5's, but not specifically the i5 3470.

My exact question would be: Should I stay with this motherboard (possibly update the Bios) and buy the i5 3470? Does my MOBO support it? If not, a similar price and performance option I had was to go Haswell and get a B85 along with the i5 4570. Again, no overclock involved. Any suggestions?

  1. All H61 motherboard should be able to support the i5-3470. I'm sure there is a Ivy bridge BIOS update for it.

    But the i5 3470 is not on the list of supported CPUs. The i5 3550 is, however: http://ark.intel.com/compare/65516,53426

    The i5 3550 may be hard to find but is prolly cheaper than the Haswell option because you can re-use your current mobo. Haswell would be more up to date and provides better upgrade options

  3. Thanks for the help. I've decided to go for the B85 + 4570 as It is about $20 more than just the i5 3550 on Amazon ($238), and the B85 has more features I need like Sata 6gb/s.

    Sounds like a winner.
