MSI R9 270 Low Fps in game and Win7 animation going slow

Hello people,

Well this is my first thread on Tom´s hardware... so here´s my situation...

I recently bought a MSI R9 270 to start upgrading my PC, i installed it with recent drivers from AMD website and a clean installation of Win 7 x64. After i boot up my system i noticed that windows animations like minimize folders and clicking on start icon are going kind of slow... too slow... thing that wasnt happening when i was working with Intel HD graphics (Motherboard Integrated Graphics), other thing is that low demanding games like LoL or Torchlight II are running with low FPS. I had a HD 5830 and i ran games like Far Cry 3, Skyrym on FULL graphics having 50-60fps without a problem... so how come that i now have a more powerful video card and cant even pass 45fps on games like torchlight??

Win 7 x64
CPU I3 550 3.20GHz
Motherboard Asrock H55M-LE
4GB RAM DDR3
Western Digital 500GB SATA
MSI R9 270 2GB

Could it be a trouble that i have a 2GB Video card with only 4GB RAM on my system?

im planning to upgrade to FX8000 Series and 8GB of RAM but im afraid my videocard is defective or something...

Any Ideas? config? tips? im really worried about this... its a 200$ card and i can even play torchlight on full -.-!

The one concern I would have is how many 12V rails the PSU has, if the amps are limited by being on different rails then you could be hitting a limit there, with the 5830 since it has two power inputs the sources are probably both rails, since the 270 is drawing from one input it will be drawing all its current off one rail

This article goes into some testing of that PSU and the close up shows that it has two rails one with 16A and one with 17A

For AMD GPU's first thing I would do is find their driver uninstaller

For some reason they can have problems with old drivers not being overwritten

Second thing would be to try and stress test the GPU, try furmark or similar and see what your score versus others with the same card, if you see a big difference then it may be related to the card, whereas if its the same then the card is ok there is just a problem using it

Not sure how to check and confirm that the onboard GPU is not being used, should be a bios option for your board but double check that it is disabled

well ive just installed win 8.1 all drivers clean... bios checked and default GPU is on PCI Express so it should be working only the video card... now i made some tests and it now happens that i have such a low framerate on League of legends.. Wich was not happening before... i tried far cry 3 wich i played a lot on my hd5830 and had no problems at Ultra settings, now i cant even play it on low :S

Am i missing something here? installation? configuration? does these new video cards needs some extra configuration to properly work? im going nuts right now hehe

One more thing that i didnt mentioned before... i bought an sapphire hd 7870 before this MSI and got same issues... could it be that these new cards cant properly work with cheap CPU´s or something? i checked a lot of videos of gameplays with similar settings (I3, 4GBRam, Hd7870 or r9 270)

Well, it could be, but using my old HD 5830 as a reference and since the 5830 has a lower power compsuntion i could say that my PSU is not the problem here..

Radeon R9 270 150 Watts
Radeon HD 5830 175 Watts

But im not going to be close-minded here.. and ill try another PSU to see how it goes... any other suggestion is well received hehe

For a quick test I would try using a different pci power connector (hopefully will be on a different rail then your motherboard) and see if there is any improvement, if you do have another PSU handy (or a friend who has one you can steal for the afternoon) see if this helps solve your problem

Hello... its beem a while since a post on this thread... so ive just upgrade my whole rig to:

Gygabyte GA 970a UD3P
FX 8320 - 8 GB Corsair Vengeance
EVGA 600B PS

I had an I3 550 Bottlenecking my GPU so i bought new CPU, MOBO and new PS (Just in case power was the problem)... but nope... i still have some problems with my card... its performance its not what i expected... its avg Fps in game are way to low comparing them to what ive found on internet reviews...

I´ve done CPU unparking, disabled power saving features from my MOBO, install uninstalled drivers even fresh reinstall of windows (7 and 8.1), i ran a lot of benchmarks and my scores are way too low comparing them to older cards so im almost giving up on this one dont know what else to do...

Hey at this point I have no idea what could be causing the issue besides an issue with the card itself, I take it you have checked the card for overheating since you have been playing around with all the features, I'm sorry I cant help more but I would say re post on the forum with your new specs and see if anyone has any advice

hehe dont worry i understand... im starting to think its the card but the thing is that before this i tried with a HD 7870 and had the same problems but ofc that was in my old rig... anyway thanks a lot for replying and for the ideas, ill repost it as you say. thanks a lot man

try running games in dx9 dx11 sucks i notice up to 40 fps difference

also set gpu fan speed manual to 100% also if ur ram is below 1600 ddr3 you wil get lower fps

PS also im IT and game myself i own

fx6300+ oc 4ghz
8gb 1866
r9 270
700w psu
oh and a must have is sata3 ssd i will never use regular ever for gaming
