What to do after Windows 8 refresh?

So I refreshed my laptop last night after a situation involving a black screen on boot after trying to reinstall an intel driver. Now my PC is back to the old windows 8 and factory settings with some files intact. However, there's a file I have now called Windows.old and I'm not sure what to do with it, and my sound says that no audio output device is installed. For now, all I know that I need to do is get all the updates again and put windows 8.1 back in. If there's anything else I need to do, please say so, and thank you in advance.

I have an Asus S500CA. Also as an update, I did fix the audio issue and I'm updating windows as I speak. Although I'm still unsure what I should do about the windows.old folder.

An update on my progress, and I have sad news. While I was installing the last of the windows 8 updates to prepare for 8.1, I saw that my windows.old file was overwriten. So it looks like I might be redownloading my games and what not. But I need to ask, do windows updates overwrite the windows.old folder?
