How to replace a broken CPU?

My CPU is dead and I was just reading up on how to replace CPUs and a problem has popped up. Most places say that you need to update your bios before you upgrade/replace your CPU, otherwise the new CPU won't work, but to do that you need to use your old CPU. The thing is, my CPU is broken, so how do I update the bios? If I buy the exact same model of CPU, would I still need to update the bios?

Sorry if that doesn't make much sense, and thanks very much in advance.

CPU's hardly ever fail. Short of damaging pins through mishandling, things of that nature. I think lots of people assume it is the cpu for whatever reason.

Hi, thanks for your speedy reply.

The last week or so my computer was crashing and blue screening, then one day it wouldn't boot, it would just start and stop repeatedly. So I tested another PSU, got the same problem, went through a checklist on this website and still got the same problem. Today, I decided to test a CPU from an older computer in it to see if it would boot, and although it didn't boot, it ran consistently, it didn't start and stop like before, but I couldn't get a signal (and I'm guessing that's because the older CPU wasn't compatible with my motherboard),

Hope that makes sense.

Without other known working parts, that is tricky.
Put the original CPU back in and see if we can determine why it was crashing.

What was the last thing you did before it started crashing?

Just the usual, play some Haxball (an online game), listen to music through Spotify, and watch a few Youtube videos. I might take it to a computer specialist and see if he can determine what's wrong.

Again, thanks for your replies.

Honestly it makes no sense at all. How did it run consistently if it did not even boot?

Initially it would just start and stop every few seconds, and the fan would be weak, but when I put in the older CPU, the fan was powerful and the computer didn't start and stop, it just ran.

As above, create a Linux boot CD. Try to boot with the original CPU.
This is just to test the hardware, not to install anything.

I'm not sure how to do that but I'll look it up tomorrow and give it a go. I'm not sure how to boot from a CD though when I can't access the boot menu.

Cheers for the reply/
