I have a MSI GT70 Dominator(Windows 8) with a NIVIDIA GTX 870, a family member recently got rid of a "junk" monitor (an off brand 1400x1050 LCD screen). Instead of trowing it in the trash i decided to connect it to my laptop with a VGA cable I found around the house. At first it worked fine as an extended screen for doing research, then i went a little overboard and tried to hook up a 55" LED tv to the HDMI port to use 3 screens at once. The 2nd monitor went black when i put in the HDMI, so I unplugged it and it came back up as a copy of my laptop, not an extended screen. When i changed its properties to be an extended screen both my laptop and the monitor went black screened. Shortly after the monitor flashed a red "Out of Range" sign and continues to whenever i attempt to turn it on.

So, as long as the VGA is plugged into the laptop I cannot access the additional monitor, or my laptop due to the "Out of Range" error and the blacked out screen. I know the laptop is able to take commands while the screen is black (I opened the "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" menu while it was blackened.

I have attempted changing resolutions, setting my laptop in safemode before plugging it in, nothing works and I am unable to even use my laptop screen if the VGA is plugged in.
If anyone has any information on this please help soon. Thanks.

Is there an input setting on the monitor? Try to get the model number. Can you try it on a different computer?
