I would be using the onboard sound and not a sound card. My motherboard is a ROG Maximus VII with SupremeFX audio. I am playing games like bf4 and other first person shooters so I heard that something with 7.1 channels will be better than a head phone with 5.1 channels. I know basically nothing about audio so what headset do you guys recommend within this price range and why.

Solution
Never get a sound card unless it's external.

Your best bet will be this headset: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Gaming-Headset-Surround/dp/B003VANOFY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1402270592&sr=8-2&keywords=logitech+wireless+headset

Reason: It's wireless so no cables to fuss around with.
Surround sound is kind of placebo market but just in case this headset can simulate 7.1, so big drivers :)!

To clarify, the amount of "surround sound" a headset can simulate does not mean it's better or worse. Any pair of headphones or speakers can simulate surround sound (look up Virtual Barber Shop on YouTube).

Good luck!
