I was looking to buy the GTX 770 since most reviews pitting it against the R9 280x favours it for its lower temperatures and power consumption. At the time of the reviews, the price of the two cards was roughly the same. While price of a GTX 770 is still just over £200, a 280x can be found for as lows as £160. Would I better off saving £40-50 and switching to the 280x?

I play a range of games and am buying it for an EVGA Hadron Air (ITX) where temps and air flow could also be of significance.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

R9 280X is better at 1440p than GTX 770. At 1080p, both are equally good and trade blows.
If you prefer physx then go GTX 770.
If you prefer Mantle then go R9 280X.
Make sure it is a non-reference cooler.
If you save £40-50 where can you put that to use?
What power supply are you pairing it with?

The Hadron comes with a custom gold rated 500w PSU built into the chassis. Users are reportedly running GTX 780s from it without issue.

I always forget that the EVGA Hadron cases have power supply built in.

I'm building from scratch so it could go towards anything from RAM to SSDs.

Looks ok. I presume you want wifi.
You might want two ram sticks for dual channel which is slightly faster and cheaper. But it is still fine if you were planning to upgrade to 16GB.
This build is for editing and rendering as well?

I got a great deal on a used Xeon processor and decided to take it up. I do some technical work for university as well so it was a case of two birds, one stone.

I can tell you first hand that the GTX 770 is a solid GPU, I got one Last summer for $379 CND. on sale too. They were a bit more at launch, unlike the R9 series which has gone up and is almost back to where is was at launch , The Elephant in the room on these two GPU's is Memory. The R9 280X 3GB 6000MHz on a 384 bit bus will start to shine at resolutions greater than 1080p. ie 2560x1440, 2560x1600. Mind you the GTX 770 2GB 7010MHz 256 bit is no slouch either. It may not do as well at 1440p but the this tweaked GK104 GPU has very exceptional memory bandwidth. The 7GHz Memory speed(effective) on paper does not seem like much but This GPU has better memory usage than the GTX 780 I tried. more on that laetr i have to go
