Hardware Issues

My Setup

  • ■ AMD FX-6300 @ 3.5 GHz
    ■ HIS IceQ HD 7870 GHz Edition @ 1212 MHz
    ■ 16 GB DDR3-1600 Corsair Vengance
    ■ ASUS M5A97 R2.0
    ■ Samsung 840 120GB SSD(Boot)
    ■ Seagate 1TB(Games and Media)
    ■ SeaSonic 520W PSU
    ■ Cooler Master HAF 912

My Expectations.
-Able to run 2 1080p (24 inch and a 21 inch) monitors while running the game in full screen windowed mode, getting 60+ steady fps on High/Ultra settings across the entire game, including 10 man raids.

- Run multiple add-ons including the ElvUI Suite, TradeSkillMaster Suite, TellMeWhen, Skada, Auctionator, and others totalling less than 200MB RAM usage.

Actual Performance. High (Recommended) Settings. (Setting Details Below)
23-40 fps in Stormwind. (31 Standing by the AH)
40-55 fps in most of the world. (53 Standing Still)
15-25 fps in 10 man raids... (SoO) (30 Standing Still)

Lastly, out of curiosity: 23 fps Flying at max altitude above the Stormwind Trade District. Screenshot to give an idea of quality. (See the rendering, and the foggish appearance... I'm rendering max distance and yet it still gives me this low quality "fog of war" effect)

My Question.

Considering I am using a 6 core current Gen processor, 16 GB of RAM, a SSD for boot and WoW, and a more than capable GPU shouldn't I be achieving my expectations? I do run Spotify most of the time while gaming as well as Chrome... But it shouldn't have an impact, right? I'll keep this short as I believe my evidence can speak for itself.....but I believe my system can perform MUCH faster. I mean, I know my specs are meager compared to may builds out there...and yes i know Intel would do me better. But this IS my current build, and with that I would like to work with what I have. I will mention that everything in this build is stock. Including the CPU cooler, which i will be replacing with the 212 EVO in the coming 2 weeks along with some 120-140mm Cougar fans. Below you will find all additional technical diagnostics I found necessary. If you would like a 3dMark, PCMark 8, or the like please let me know and I will oblige. My goal is to get my computer operating as efficiently as possible in game.

Cheers,
Monk

I disagree about blaming it all on the CPU, the real issue here appears to be optimization, whether that is WOW's or some other addon's fault I'm not really sure.

You see, it's not the lack of power and it isn't the combination of the CPU/Graphics etc, it's that WOW (as said before) is really only optimized for an Intel CPU. I can't, however, say that that is the only fault either, as I have friends who get more FPS than this on AMD processors with similar settings and weaker rigs.

I would ask this same question on a WOW forum and see if anybody else is having a similar problem or knows of a way to fix it, this is the only game that is giving you trouble, correct?

Well. firstly WoW is optimized for intel CPUs AGGRESSIVELY. That said i've had problems with addons in the past getting me from 100fps+ to 20fps so its most likely and addon acting up. You won't be able to see it in CPU usage or GPU usage but try turning them off completely one by one until you find the one causing problems. Also don't expect high fps with a lot of background processes open. Chrome is known for eating up cpu and ram.

All in all WoW is retarded on AMD. I use to open 2 instances of WoW back when i was playing and i would get higher FPS than just having one open. I gave up on trying to optimize it on amd...

Well I tried to post DxDiag but Tom's kept bugging out.

Anyway I understand it is optimized for Intel/Nvidia... But with my hardware shouldn't I be getting better performance? As I stated in my expectations list. I built my computer expecting to be able to run many many addons while in game. I assumed my build was solid enough to handle that load. Do you think I could be missing anything? Any suggestions??

Anyone else?? I know there has to be more insight out there than"Sorry you chose the wrong rig, mate" Games are meant to be played across numerous configurations...and I know mine isnt nearly that unique. Help?

It's pretty much your FX-6300. I've been saying for months that Intel CPUs are practically necessary to get 60 fps in MMOs. AMD CPUs just don't have the core per core speed that most MMOs require; having that many players around and communicating with the server constantly is a really heavy load on individual cores.

The rest of your specs are more than enough.

The best way to answer this question would be to try it and find out.

I don't play WoW but I concur with many of the other posts in this thread. MMOs are notoriously CPU hogs, and they often aren't designed with a great deal of concurrency in mind, which can act as a solid double whammy against your FX-6300.
