So one is an Intel core i3 CPU 2120 3.33 GHz
and the other one is an Intel core i5 CPU 750 2.67 GHz

Now everyone will say that the i5 processor is better however the i5 one is alot older than the i3 one. The i3 one was bought about 1 year ago and the i5 one was bought about 4 years ago. So does that age difference make the i3 better or not?

Benchmarks give the i3 an ever-so-slight edge over the older i5, but at the same time, some apps will still run better on the i5 by utilizing the extra cores that are available. Which you choose is really personal preference.

they both have 4 threads... and the i3 is a newer manufacturing process with hyper threading and a higher clock rate...

According to CPUBoss, the i3-2120 marginally outperforms the i5-750. However, they both are not the same socket so you can not just pop either one on the same motherboard. Age does make a difference as the newer CPU has updated features and better technology than the older generation.

The i5 750 would be better as it can be overclocked and the i3 cannot. ;)

i3 is a dual core the i5 is a quad. Even if the i3 has 4 threads, the clock speed per core is basically split in half for each thread, hence 1.6 ghz per thread.

Also the i5 has turbo boost that clocks it at 3.2 when you are using it, I have seen turbo boost in action (though in the newer i5s) it actually clocks up and remains at the higher clock for the entire usage duration.

The only 2 things the i3 has over it is 0.1 ghz clock speed higher and that it can map 32 GB of ram while this i5 maps 16.

If you are not going for 32 GB ram I'd personaly take the i5. I personaly have been down this road where I chose a hyperthreaded cpu over a true quad... It was the biggest mistake of my life, I ended up changing that i3 5 month after I bought it. And I only got rid of it for 40% its original price. There is no compairason between true quad and hyperthreaded duo, quad beats it easily. It's easily twice the power

the much older i5 wins with its overclocking potential but how long can it stay a contender at 4ghz+ with its age and use considered.

Either way, you are looking at a dead platform.
