So I am a nooby when it comes to building computers but just recently my GPU started overheating insanely. It was 81 Degrees while just on standby and still is right now. I took apart the thing and found bits of dust. I cleaned and blew it out wiping bits of the heat sink and everything. I think I saw the thermal paste may have been needed to be replaced which is probaly what I will do since it didn't look very good. I'm going to put specs just in case if theirs suggestions of preventing this. Maybe I need a new motherboard or power supply?
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 660
Power supply: Antec 620w
Motherboard: eMachines MCP61PM-GM

Solution
It could be a faulty power supply. But I doubt it - Antec are good.

I'd say the card is faulty. You haven't tried overclocking it have you?

Also double check the temp reading eg HWInfo - Sensors.

You could possibly just have bitcoin mining malware happily running in the background. Download Malwarebytes and run a full scan while disconnected from the internet and see if it detects anything.

No I have never tried overclocking as I like power but not a risky person. I'm pretty sure its faulty, as it just crashed again without warning. i will try Malwarebytes. if it is to be faulty, whats another Nvidia card you guys recommend that's around $135-140?

I'm going to try it, but for question, how could a virus looking for money just increase my GPU temp so high? It really baffles me!

Aha! So while using Malwarebytes their were quite a lot of pesky buggers hiding in the shadows of my PC. Thank you for the program, currently I have my old GT 620 in so Ill probably try my 660 tomorrow. I'll also keep a lookout on that card suggestion. Get back to you guys in time! Thanks for help!

So recently I was checking my PC ran games, and it wasn't crashing but still overheating. I decided to go through PC uninstall anything possible fishy or malicious, ran Rkill. My temps were around 81-83, as soon as I ran Rkill dropped to the 50's. While checking the logs, looks like something in chrome was messing with it. Some sort of plugin that must have been doing it. Going to try playing games for a bit and see the results.

81c is a normal gaming temp...not high at all. Your web browser may have graphics that are causing the card to run at full 3D clocks.

The key is how fast are your clocks while hitting 81c? If you are just on the desktop with idle clocks, then that's a problem. If browser graphics are pushing the clocks up, or you're gaming, then it's fine.
