Hi all,

I could really use your help.

Bought a new motherboard and CPU [asus z87i & it 4670k with stock cooler]. First time I booted the machine on, everything worked perfectly. Installed Win7, installed all my drivers - not one issue. Turned the system off overnight, and in the morning the system refused to boot up.

It would power off and then back on again every few seconds, and then once every five times it would stay on for about 30 seconds but no BIOS screen or Win7 boot. Each time a solid red light would appear. Once in a blue moon, the machine would power on, post bios and boot properly. When this happens, I checked CPU temps and to make sure the machine was booting everything properly - not one issue. I kept the machine on for four days, not a single problem. Switching it off again, and I have the same problem.

What I've tried:

Pressing the clear CMOS button in the back
Removing the mobo battery for 2mins
Booting the machine with one of the two ram sticks, trying 2 different pairs I had around
Booting with a different PSU
Booting with only 1 SSD

Any suggestions I can try tonight?

Cheers

Could be a number of things.

Would take the board out of the PC case and set it up on a non-conductive surface with a bare minimum of components and see if you can get it to POST. If you can, update UEFI to the latest version. If not, list all the parts used.

Heya - thanks for responding.

Results:
CPU+heatsink = Does not power down, powers up and stays on
CPU+heatsink+GPU = Does not power down, powers up and stays on
CPU+heatsink+GPU+DDR = Shuts down after 1second, boots back up - repeat
CPU+heatsink+DDR = Shuts down after 1second, boots back up - repeat
CPU+heatsink+1 stick of DDR in either slot = Shuts down etc
CPU+heatsink+ 1 stick of another manufactor of DDR = Shuts down etc

Appears to be the DDR slots are faulty?

Specs of the machine:
i5 4670k [not OC'd]
2x4GB sticks of Kingston HyperX Predator series 2400htz DDR3
MSI Nvidia 760 2GB
EVGA Hadreon Air with 500W gold PSU

All of these parts are brand new, but I've tried to DDR and GPU in another device. I've also tried booting the Asus z87i with a coolmaster 850w PSU & Kingston HyperX 1600htz DDR3 ram, no change.

Hi,

Bare minimum of components means the bare minimum you'd need for the board to POST. Tht would be at least CPU and one DRAM module - so we can disregard any results that don't include those.

I would check the CPU socket for any bent pins. Clear CMOS as well. Other than that, difficult to say what the cause is..

Checked the CPU socket and nothing wrong there, same with clearing the CMOS. Feels like a faulty board, so RMA'ing it. Sad about that, the board itself is beautiful.
