how do i fix this, my pc monitor started going on and off as if it lost the signal, then it suddenly started turning itself off. The other day i got the blue screen saying "system thread exception not handled (atihd86)"
I assume its a faulty driver but now the pc reboots after 30 secs and i haven't even got the time to get it in safe mode.
Please help

This might explain a bit.
Just thought I'd mention even if not related to the problem.
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0Ag...
That motherboard has potential conflicts with that 8320/50 depending on the specific model and can cause your system to overheat.
I have a feeling this is a prebuilt computer. :S

I wouldn't know how to overclock it,
I haven't made any changes apart from adding a 32" tv on a dvi cable from the graphics card. I had this setup berfore but recently i moved house and bought a longer cable - wouldn't have thought a cable change would do this Only thing that springs to mind is my hard drive failed and the pc won't start with it connected. So i dis-connected it and it runs/ran fine
I'll do what you suggested and get back to you.

TO Jaraldo,
i did get the screen of death but only after taking out the graphics card and trying to use the onboard graphics to try eliminate the problem. but now i don't get the blue screen with either graphics options. The pc turns on, starts up. I can log in and get 15 seconds of use before it restarts. Then it gets stuck on the first screen (press f8 screen) where i have to manually reset it.
I don't have the boot disk as you right it was pre-built and didn't some with one. I did manage to get to the startup repair screen but it reset itself before i could do anything.
I was wondering if it was hot!

Here is your manual
http://www.manualowl.com/m/Asus/M5A78L-M-USB3/Manual/26...
If you could list your PSU aswell, just so you have some more info as it is more than likely a junk one. You will actually have to look for a model numer or something on the PSU itself.
But do what i7baby says first as trying to get your system cooler is the priority.

I remember someone had a thread a few weeks ago with this model and it was whining and blue screening bad...
Edit: if I remember right, that is psu is mostly in the UK, so you have access to the xfx 550w; a nice seasonic based PSU that won't ever betray you

another update,
i reset the bios, undated date, boot order etc.
pc started to load then screen went blank, another screen appeared with loads of writing on it. stuff like
usb device(s): 1 keyboard
auto-detecting sata3g_1...ide hard disk
then at the bottom of the page it says
"power supply surges detected during the previous power on, asus anti-surge was triggered to protect from unstable psu"
f1 to run setup
f2 to load default values and continue
I tried F1 and it took me to bios, so i tried f2 and now its trying an auto repair
did this for 20 secs and loaded the page mentioned above with the f1 & f2 options.
Is it looking like my rubbish psu is causing this

Well, I don't know about you, but for me that's a good sign lol.
Far easier to go get a new PSU than it being some bios problem or drivers that could take days of research to fix
My first CX600 PSU did the same thing to my build with the built in anti surge, I got a new Seasonic PSU and 3.5 years going strong still
I'm sure the poor ARTIX couldn't handle the 8320 and the r9 270 very well and eventually lead to this...One thing I hope is that your mobo is alright. :S
Just so you know, this is a common problem with all prebuilt computers, all terrible motherboards and powersupplies... >:$

hehe, care to look the brand up on the tier list?
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-su...
Hope it's at least a tier 3, then maybe it's useable!
