I have and old Toshiba Satellite 1415-105 notebook and the20gig hard drive died. The screen is still excellent so I'd like to replace the hard drive, but I am seriously confused here.
The specs say it uses a Ehanced IDE (ATA-5),9.5 mm height,14.3 avg access time (read/write),3ms track to track seek time(read/write),supports PIO mode 4,ultra DMA5,multiword DMA2,
I don't have a clue what I am looking for. I do know I don't want to put much money into a very old notebook. A bigger hard drive would be great, but the cheapest price is paramount.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would be in your debt. Thanks!

Hi

you need a bog standard ATA/IDE 2.5" (also called PATA) hard disk
but there is serious risk that there is a chipset or bios limit on maximum hard drive size
in the past these cropped up at 32GB , 128GB and 2TB

Finding a new small hard disk in a retail shop may be difficult, but will be easy on internet
There are some companies which specialise in stocking obsolete parts or there are some on Amazon
40GB drives often had switches to force 32GB capacity , a 40, 60, 80 or 120 GB drives may work

some research on Google will help
