There is no correct countepart. AMD's AM3+ socket is at least a few years old, and Intel's H97 uses socket 1150, which is still old, but is of a newer chipset, and supports new CPUs.

If you're just looking for a motherboard that supports 3 way SLI/Xfire, the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX Rev 2.0 supports 3 way GPUs. But I'm more than willing to be that you'd easily find a bottleneck with an AMD CPU and three GPUs.

Old? LGA1150 is barely past its first birthday. With more people moving towards 4-5 years upgrade/replacement cycles, one year old out of a three years market life and five years service life (at least as a primary computer) is still relatively young.

LGA1151 coming out next year for Skylake will make LGA1150 feel like old news.
