I boot up my computer, I log in, I see my Metro/Desktop and after a few seconds the screen goes black. My computer and monitor are still turned on but I can't do anything.

I thought my GPU or monitor caused this problem so I downloaded the newest drivers from Nvidia and did a clean install of those drivers.
Didn't work.
I switched my monitors input from DVI to HDMI
Didn't work.

What's causing the problem and how do I fix it?

Specs:
MSI GTX 760 Hawk
AMD fx 8320
Biostar TA970
XFX PRO550w
Windows 8.1
ASUS 239H

Thank you.

Have you tried using a different display method such as a tv or another monitor?

When you say the monitor "goes black," is it still receiving power? (Is there an orange light lit up or a green flashing light?) I was thinking that the power cord for the monitor might be bad

The monitor is still on, there's backlight, but my whole screen is just black.
A week ago I had the same problem, but when I went in, for instance, the news app, my screen would turn blue, or brown, etc.

So it's fine until you open a program?

Sometimes it goes black when I open a program, sometimes it just randomly goes black after a few seconds.

The problem is not with the monitor. The problem could be your graphics card, RAM, or maybe even a virus.

I would say to run the machine with only one stick of RAM and see if that works. If the same problem happens, use a different stick. If the problem persists, the RAM is probably not the problem, unless it is just low quality RAM. What RAM do you have?

Next I would try a complete reinstall of Windows. Make sure everything is backed up first.

There might be something else that I'm missing, but I can't think of anything else that would cause your symptoms.

EDIT: One quick question: is Windows still running at that point? Do you still hear sounds?

Ive got Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3 1600MHz CL9 1.5V, and I dont know if windows is still running or not, but im going to try to boot with one stick of ram now.

That is good RAM. The type of RAM is not the problem, but go ahead and boot with one stick; one of them might be bad.

The RAM isn't the problem, I tried running Windows with each stick and the problem still occurs.
However, when I logged on I tried to run some music before the screen went black. I could listen for 5 seconds and then the screen went black again. The music didn't stop, but it didnt go on either, it started to make an annoying sound.
So I think the problem lies with windows itself.
I'm posting this in safe mode so I'm still able to do (some) things.

Yes, it definitely sounds like the problem is with Windows. I would do a complete reinstall, and see if that fixes it.
