Strange Performance Problem (FPS Spikes)

Hello forum,

After extensive research on Google, I can't seem to find the answer to my problem. Hopefully somebody here will have some insight.

The problem started probably about 2 - 3 days ago, and has never happened before. Occasionally (sometimes quite frequently), when I'm in a relatively high graphics-intensive game, my FPS will dip to about 50, dwindle for a couple of seconds, and then return to normal.

I usually run at 200 FPS. The only change I made to my laptop was updating my NVIDIA driver. Naturally, I tried downgrading, but the problem persisted. I then reinstalled Windows on my SSD, and the problem persisted.

My specifications are as follows:
Code:
Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel Core i7-4800MQ CPU @ 2.70 GHz
16 GB DDR3 RAM @ 1600 MHz
Alienware 078R5X (U3E1)
Intel HD Graphics 4600
3 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M
112 GB OCZ-AGILITY3 (SSD)

My CPU will reach dangerous temperatures of around 90 degrees Celsius, but the CPU's specification says that it's allowed to reach temperatures of up to 100. As far as I'm aware, the CPU usage is not close to 100%.

Some sources have suggested changing the "Processor power management" maximum processor state to something less than 100% to avoid Turbo Boost turning on/off, so I changed it to 99%, but it made no difference.

My laptop has plenty of ventilation as it is raised off the floor, has a dedicated fan for the CPU and another for the GPU, and is kept in a cool room. I have not overclocked my CPU nor my GPU, and I have never changed any bios settings (or settings pertaining to the performance of my CPU or GPU).

:( I'm stumped. But at this point, I'm willing to give anything a try. The spikes can sometimes be so damn frequent, to the point that it's almost impossible to play.

Thanks in advance to anybody who answers!

Resolved. There was something wrong with my heatsink – it's now been replaced and my laptop functions as before. Although I was taking all the precautions in moderating the temperature, it was beyond my control. The fans were blowing out lukewarm air while the CPU was at temperatures of 90 degrees Celsius. As the CPU got hotter, thermal throttling kicked in, hindering its performance (hence the FPS spikes) until a safer operating temperature was reached. Thank goodness for warranties!
