What processor can i use?

Hey! I have a optiplex 780 mini tower. I have upgraded everything except the CPU. It's got a e8400 in it. The tech guide says i can go all the way up to a Q8300. Can i go higher? Could i use an i3 or an i5? And would the Q8300 would a SIGNIFICANT upgrade over the E8400 3 ghz?

And if anybody is wondering, i have a GTX 750 ti and 4 gb of ram

a) yes, but still awful. It would be a waste of money.

Socket 775 does not support any Core i series processors, an i3 or i5 would be incompatible. And an upgrade to the Q8300 would still only get you in the ranks of today's lower end processors.

If I were in your situation, I would only pay 10-20 dollars for an Ebay/Craigslist Q8300. What's the model of your computer? There are quad core socket 775 processors.
