I have a Dell Dimension 2400. I am (was) in the process of wiping my hard drive clean using dban (i'm selling my computer). But my CD-Rom drive is broken. It won't eject and I've tried everything paperclip etc. I have a DVD drive that works. They are both plugged in with a large gray cable running to my hard drive. I want to make my DVD drive the bootable drive so i can boot to start the dban process. In my bios my dvd drive is not listed so I can't select that to be my bootable drive. Is there a way to make my dvd drive the bootable drive so i can do the dban process?

Or if that is not possible, is there another way to wipe my hard drive clean by using an online program or do all erasure software programs have to be booted from a disc? Thank you!

i have been in the bios already and the DVD drive is not listed as an option to choose as the 1st bootable drive. This was noted above. I also unplugged the gray cable from the CDROM drive that connects to the motherboard and left the DVD drive plugged in but still the bios does not list the DVD drive as a bootable drive.

When the CDROM was plugged in and I opened up my disc burning software to burn dban to it it only showed the CDROM drive to copy to even when the CDROM was unplugged I thought it would default to DVD drive but it doesn't list anything then.

So back to the original question how do I make my DVD drive my 1st bootable drive so i can do dban? Is that possible?

Or is there another way to erase a hard drive other than having to boot from a disc??
