Inconstant gaming performances

Hi,

I have weird performance problems on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 17R). For example, this morning I played Sniper Elite V2 at Ultra settings with no FPS drops. An hour ago, the game was not playable at the lowest settings. It has been doing that since I bought it 3 months ago. Does somebody know what could be the cause of this?

Operating System:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
CPU:
Intel Core i7 3630QM @ 2.40GHz 50 °C
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
RAM:
8,00 Go Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)
Motherboard:
Dell Inc. 00MT1R (CPU Socket - U3E1) 49 °C
Graphics:
S24D590 (1920x1080@60Hz)
SD590_S24D590PL (HDMI) (1920x1080@60Hz)
2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M (Dell) 44 °C

No, I just downloaded this application to get an overview of my specifications (I was a bit lazy to write them). My laptop was not doing anything when I took those temperatures. And no, restarting does not help. Thank you for the help.

Its seems to me like it may be your motherboard, 80 degrees for a motherboard is a bit unsettling.

Generally its better to keep the CPU and GPU temps under 85 degrees (i personally prefer under 77 to 80 degrees).
0-40C = Cold.
50-70C = Typical-ish use, still safe.
70-85C = Heavy use, consider moving to flat surface, elevating, or cooling it.
85+ = Hot! Go take a break.

but definitely consider a laptop cool and see if that helps at all.
I personally recommend http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834992853
i used it for my laptop when it was hitting 92 degrees and it help bring it down to around 75 to 77.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

I bought a cooler like you told me and even if i'm about 90% sure that it is not the problem, I know that it will extend my laptop's lifetime.

I think I have found the problem. Everything has been running perfectly for about 1 month now. Yesterday I unplugged my laptop for the first time in a month and used it on the battery. I boot (or booted?) it today and it needed to charge. I started a game of League of Legends and got an horrible FPS (even my screen was going black sometimes). So I believe it has less performances when it is charging its battery or if I boot it unplugged and plug it later.

Is that a problem some of you already encountered?

Well charging the battery actually generates heat so it could add to an overheating problem. But it is possible that some energy saving profile is kicking in. Check your battery management profiles, I think it might be under 'power options' somewhere in the control panel. Your laptop could be throttling a lot of stuff when it thinks the battery is low/charging. If it does appear to be a power charging issue, then get an external charger and a spare battery maybe.

If you havent been fiddling with the power settings most laptop are default set to some variation of the "Balanced" power option. This power setting enables full performance when plugged in but run on a power saving setting while unplugged.

Generally setting your laptop to "Full Performance" power setting should remedy the issue. this can be found by clicking the battery icon and going to more power options. If perchance you wish to create your own power setting, there is an option for that also under the more power options setting.

Also to clarify, when you say, you booted it up and it needed to charge, did you plug it in THEN play league of legends or you left it unplugged and played league?

Another thing, some laptops require you to restart them every now and then in order to have things running smoothly. That being said, do you restart your laptop every now and then or do you just put your laptop on hibernate and never actually shut it down.

I plugged it then started playing.

And my laptop is normally always on my desk, plugged, and I usually shut it down for the night.

Also, it's always on Full performances mode. Could it be that my laptop always uses the power mode (or whatever) it had at the moment of the boot? Because sometimes I just forget to plug it before booting and I need to restart it in order to have good performances.
